If you asked me 149 years ago, that I'd be standing here on this god forsaken Earth. I would have called you insane.

I got shot by my dad.
I had no purpose in life.
Cursed without friends.

I'm Damon Salvatore.
A vampire with issues.
Yet I am completely human.

It was hard to not to feel almost bad for the man in front of her, but that emotion was short-lived, quickly replaced with more confusion as his hand was on her shoulder. Surely, there was no way that he had any idea what she was feeling… But then again, surely she couldn’t tell when someone was about to die. An involuntary shiver went down her spine as she looked away from him for a moment before looking back and giving him a small smile in return to the one he had given her. It wasn’t much but it was something, and perhaps that would be enough to help eliminate the feeling in her stomach that told her something just wasn’t normal about this.

He looked like he was struggling, Lydia kept her green eyes locked on his, searching for anything that could help her with what was going on. “Sorry?” She couldn’t help the larger smile that was now on her face, partially because she had no idea how else to react. “Are you okay? Do you—Do you need help?” Concern in her voice but the smile never leaving her lips, something about him making her feel slightly more at ease, slightly more like she was safe. It was a silly notion given that this was someone that she didn’t even know. He could easily over power her at any given moment and kidnap her but… something told her that wasn’t going to happen. Everything in her told her that this was someone that she could trust. “I’m Lydia Martin. What’s your name?” Part of her hoping that this would be an easier question for him to answer.

Words strung together in his mind, Damon knew what he wanted to say but it just didn’t come out the right way. All he could do was nod his head to say, yes. I am okay. Along with shrugging  for, I don’t think I need help? It was tiresome but Damon hoped that with time he’ll gain his ability to speak properly. He smiled brightly at her last question, because he knew could answer it. “I’m Damon.” He said without trouble. “Can’t –..remember my —-last name?”

The gears began to spin in his head – suddenly his sentences were easier to string together. If only he could just remember what happened to him. He knew she was someone special. A person with a gift, if you could call being able to know when someone was going to die a gift. Bright blue hues glanced at her, “You were —- sad. Why?” Damon didn’t enjoy seeing anyone in such a negative mood. Perhaps his past self wouldn’t care what anyone felt. He just wanted to give the girl a hug, she just probably needed a hug.

” Heaven lingo? Why not at all dear.  It is made up of an ancient and powerful group of angels who represent light and positivity. If you wish, you can consider them to be at the top of the list of supernatural beings.” She explained, waving Damon along to walk with her as they talked more.” Perhaps she knew one day you were bound to see just where she got her beauty from.” She voiced with a soft smile.” What they want is to not only give you another chance at life but also another chance at humanity. Now of course you wouldn’t be fully human but you would be as close to it as you could get.” The woman said, picking a white rose from a bush as she passed by and handed it to the male beside her.

” You’ve come a long way Damon, letting go of your old ways to become the man you are now. For centuries the Guardians have been watching you, waiting for you to mess up just so they could put an end to your life. I must say on their behalf that you have certainly surprised them.” Of course she herself was also surprised by Damon’s change but not as much as her sisters. From the start Elizabeth knew there was good in Damon, it was just a matter of time before he showed it.”Tell me, how are you feeling?”

Damon followed the woman – listening to her words about angels and a second chance. He still didn’t understand just why the Court would choose him and it was the question that ran circles in his mind. “How am I feeling?” Damon spoke softly, pondering at the question. Just exactly how was he? He was dead, his brother and girlfriend were mourning his death. Damon didn’t exactly know how to respond. “I–I don’t know. I should feel angry, but I feel nothing. As if I have turned my emotions off but in a good sense.”

Taking the rose, Damon glanced around. Blue hues observed the woman, still quite confused about the whole ordeal with the Celestial Court. “If they’re expecting me to mess up, why take interest in me? I do nothing to help people, in fact I most certainly break everything I touch. I just don;t understand how can a group of angels want anything with an impulsive no good vampire like myself.”

Her mind was elsewhere, adjusting if you would to the differences in the world now that she was without Allison. Lydia had been told time and time again that time would heal her wounds but the more time passed the more she failed to believe that anything would heal this loss. That was partially the reason for her being out now, eyes not really on anything other her phone that was as silent as could be. She figured that everyone else was better at moving on then her, and that was okay, she couldn’t hold that against them. She wouldn’t dare because while Lydia clung to what once was Allison would want people to move on with their lives. Lydia would do that for her if she could but there was something holding her back.

Sliding her phone back into the back pocket of her jeans, green eyes looked up and that was when she felt it. The presence of another behind her. Turning around, however she saw no one. Brows scrunched she moved her feet against the concrete faster then she had before, she made it a few more yards before she felt it again. Someone was here. She knew that, but she had to open her mind to that. Deep breaths left her nose before she was spinning around as quickly as she could and that was when the man came into view. Not bothering to hide her confusion at the actions he was doing Lydia blinked at him, “What?“ She questioned obviously exasperated from the tone she was taking with the stranger.

He got their attention and suddenly Damon’s eyes shone with happiness. Good, he thought to himself. Now if only he could just go over the fact that he couldn’t speak. Or remember much of anything. The happiness was short-lived as the redhead seemed troubled. Damon tilted his head as his face went pensive before turning to a sad one. Something told him that the girl was hurting emotionally, so he placed a hand on her should and simply nodded once. A warm smile spreading across his face, signalling that it was okay.

Damon wanted to speak. He knew he couldn’t get by if he didn’t. His mind raced across his vocabulary, trying to string a sentence or even find a word to say. With lips pursed in thought, blue hues locked onto the girl’s. It was a 50/50 chance of it going good or feeling embarrassed. Damon opened his mouth, trying to desperately utter a word. Just say something! His mind shouted at him. Ultimately, Damon succeeded. The word broken up as if a toddler were trying to speak, "S…o – So…r–ry?” He said, unsure of himself or if that was the word he wanted to say.

I’ll just send people to here when they ask about what is a Guardian and such.
Also Damon’s very much like book!Elena in Nightfall in which:

  • Damon can’t speak or read.
  • He’s childlike but can still understand a lot of things
  • He recognizes no one and so he has to kiss them to know them.

It was quite some time since his death. Since the white light embraced him on the Other Side. Any time past that point was a blank to Damon. He couldn’t even recall how he came back to the plane of the living. The sight of trees that surrounded him, brought a familiarity. It took awhile for Damon to get a sense over gravity again, boots staggered upon the leaves and branches. Once the former vampire got onto a road he spotted a person. His mouth hung open as if he were going to say something but not even a sound came out. Suddenly his face scrunched up in distaste that transitioned into a childish pout. Alas, he decided to wave his arms in the air – in hopes the person would notice.

”The deceased? Oh no but you are a favorite among the Celestial Court. I hope for your sake you’ve managed to make the right path your only path. My daughters Elena and Margaret are the ones who have taken the pleasure in telling me about you. Weather you wish to be flattered not not is entirely up to you.”

“Celestial Court? Is that the Heaven lingo for something? Ah Elena, of course. She never told me how beautiful her mother was. So tell me, Mrs. Gilbert, what does the Celestial Court want with a reformed serial killer like myself?”

post S5 AU – After being embraced by the mysterious White Light. Damon encountered the Celestial Court all of which they recruited the elder Salvatore to be an Earthly Guardian. Resurrecting back on Earth since god knows how long since his untimely death. Yet, the former vampire can’t communicate with anyone. Words don’t form sentences and his mind is as innocent as a child’s. He remembers no one but gets a feeling around them. As for being a Guardian? Well he’s getting used to that.
